Jewelry, as an industry, has existed for millennia. The production of jewelry in gold and other precious metals in today’s world is at an all-time high, with the global jewelry market valued at US$228 billion in 2020. Jewelry in the form of necklaces, earrings, pendants, rings, and bracelets is often made up of different parts like clasps, chains, pendants, and more.
An industry favourite?
Gold jewelry is a timeless and luxurious material that can be personalized and tailored to different tastes and styles. For this reason, there are many manufacturers on the market today who cater to the age-old notion of expressing oneself through clothing and accessories.
Fun fact: 49% of all gold mined today is made into jewelry, which remains the single largest use for gold worldwide.
Gold is also the most popular choice for jewelry manufacturing since it is one of the best metals for durability, but it also has several other benefits. Gold jewelry is hypoallergenic so it’s great for people with sensitive skin or allergies, plus it does not tarnish quickly so you don’t have to worry about constantly cleaning your jewelry.
Clasps as a niche…
There are many different types of clasps that are used in the manufacturing of jewelry and they often comprise the essential hardware of a jewelry piece, including serving as a fastener. There are also pearl findings for pearl jewelry pieces which became popular in the 1800s, when people started using them on diamond necklaces. The manufacturing process for pearl clasps is highly involved, requiring both casting and hand-detailing. Casting is done when molten metal is poured into a mold, which has the shape of the clasp, and then cooled down until it becomes solid. It is finished off by hand usually for greater detail.
Furthermore, modern equipment has changed what we can do with durability, but not always for the best. Labor and cost-efficient machines have been produced and distributed at the expense of quality. For example, at KONIG, we stick to using an old “shantz” machine to craft thicker, more durable tongues on pearl clasps that just aren’t possible with newer machines.
A world-leading manufacturer of gold pearl jewelry, KONIG Jewelry is renowned for its innovative and elegant custom pearl clasp designs, leading to its reputation as “The Clasp Source”. KONIG is a family-owned business established in 1986 that produces all its jewelry at its headquarters in Israel, using a blend of traditional and modern techniques to deliver uncompromising quality.
